Theme 1

Landlessness as a key component of the global crisis

Global poverty is largely a rural phenomenon. Of the 1.2 billion people in the world who live in extreme poverty - earning less than US$1 a day - about three quarters live in rural areas. The vast majority of these poor families depend on agriculture for their livelihoods and well-being. For these families, land plays a dominant role in their economic and social lives, and their relationship to land largely defines their access to opportunities, income, economic and nutritional security, and social status within the community. The question of how to improve and secure the relationship of poor families with land, and in particular of landless farmers and workers, remains a crucial issue in much of the world.
